Imbalance in the Elderly
Background
Falling in the elderly can occur from a number of causes and warrants a good medical evaluation. Common illnesses or medications that increase falling risk include:
- Blood pressure pills
- Heart medicines
- Diuretics (water pills)
- Muscle relaxants
- Sleeping pills
Vitamin D deficiency (from lack of sunshine) has also been shown to significantly increase the risk of falling.
Treatments
Treatment depends on the medical evaluation. Generally helpful tips include:
- Take a multivitamin powder that includes 1,000units of vitamin D (and get sunshine), vitamin B12 (250-500 mcg), and vitamin B6 (at least 45 mg).
- Keeping one’s eyes open when going down steps helps (OK to blink;-), as the body depends more on sight for balance over time, especially if there is nerve dysfunction.
- Walk on grass when sidewalks are slick.
- Wear rubber soled shoes.
- Be sure stairs are well lit and have rails on both sides.
- Put grab bars on bathroom walls near tub, shower and toilet.
- Use a nonskid bath mat in the shower or tub.
